Who Is a Good Candidate for Regenerative Therapy?

March 11, 2026 Posted by Christian (Sports Performance) Fitness & Performance Training, Health & Wellness, Hip, Back & Core, Injury Prevention, Physical Therapy, Running

For many years, musculoskeletal care followed a predictable path. Pain appeared, activity was reduced, medication was prescribed, and if symptoms persisted long enough, surgery or injections often became the final recommendations.

But the landscape of treatment has changed.

Advances in regenerative technologies now allow us to support the body’s natural repair processes in ways that were not possible before. Instead of simply suppressing symptoms, these therapies stimulate biological activity within injured or dysfunctional tissue.

At Sports Performance, we commonly use three regenerative technologies to help support tissue repair and recovery: Focused Shockwave Therapy, Radial Shockwave Therapy, and EMTT (Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy).

Understanding who is a good candidate for these treatments can help people determine whether regenerative therapy may be an appropriate option for their situation.

The Ideal Candidate for Regenerative Therapy

In general, the best candidates for regenerative therapy are individuals who are dealing with chronic tissue irritation, degeneration, or delayed healing and want to avoid more invasive procedures.

These therapies are often helpful for people who:

• Have persistent pain lasting longer than several weeks or months
• Have tried rest, medication, or traditional therapy without lasting improvement
• Want to stimulate tissue healing rather than simply reduce pain
• Are hoping to avoid injections or surgery
• Are looking to improve tissue quality and function

Regenerative technologies are not designed to instantly eliminate symptoms. Instead, they work by stimulating biological responses within the tissue that support healing and remodeling over time.

Different technologies serve different roles in that process.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Focused Shockwave Therapy?

Focused Shockwave Therapy delivers precise acoustic energy deep into injured tissue. This energy stimulates circulation, cellular activity, and tissue remodeling.

Because focused shockwave can penetrate deeper structures, it is particularly helpful for chronic tendon and joint-related conditions.

Good candidates for Focused Shockwave Therapy often include people experiencing:

• Chronic tendon injuries (Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, rotator cuff)
• Plantar fasciitis
• Joint pain in the shoulder, knee, hip, or elbow
• Ligament irritation or chronic sprains
• Calcifications within soft tissue
• Long-standing overuse injuries that have stopped improving

These individuals often feel stuck in a cycle where symptoms improve temporarily but never fully resolve. Focused shockwave can help stimulate the deeper tissue structures that need biological activity to begin remodeling again.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Radial Shockwave Therapy?

While focused shockwave targets deeper structures, Radial Shockwave Therapy spreads mechanical energy across a broader area of tissue.

This makes it extremely useful for treating muscle, fascia, and surrounding soft tissue structures that contribute to pain and movement limitations.

Good candidates for Radial Shockwave Therapy include people dealing with:

• Chronic muscle tightness or trigger points
• Fascia restrictions
• Tendon irritation from repetitive use
• Overuse injuries from sports or work
• Reduced circulation in soft tissue
• Muscle-related pain that limits movement

Radial shockwave is often used to improve the surrounding tissue environment, making it easier for the body to restore normal movement and reduce irritation.

In many cases, radial shockwave works best in combination with focused shockwave, addressing both the deeper structure and the surrounding tissue simultaneously.

Who Is a Good Candidate for EMTT?

EMTT (Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy) works differently than shockwave.

Instead of delivering mechanical energy, EMTT uses high-energy electromagnetic pulses that stimulate activity at the cellular level. These pulses influence cellular metabolism and communication between cells involved in tissue repair.

Because of this cellular effect, EMTT is particularly helpful in situations involving degenerative tissue or deeper structural stress.

Good candidates for EMTT often include people experiencing:

• Chronic joint degeneration
• Arthritis
• Bone stress reactions
• Ligament injuries
• Tendon degeneration
• Persistent joint stiffness or inflammation

EMTT can stimulate biological activity in tissue that may have slowed its natural repair processes. It is frequently combined with shockwave therapy to create a stronger regenerative response.

When Regenerative Therapies Work Best

Regenerative therapy tends to be most effective when used as part of a structured treatment strategy rather than a standalone intervention.

At Sports Performance, these technologies are often combined with:

• Movement restoration
• Progressive strength development
• Circulation and recovery strategies
• Tissue loading that supports remodeling

The goal is not simply to reduce pain. The goal is to restore healthier tissue function so the body can tolerate activity again.

When Someone May Not Be the Right Candidate

While regenerative therapies are powerful tools, they are not appropriate for every situation.

Individuals with active infections or certain medical conditions like cancer may require other forms of care first.

A proper evaluation helps determine whether regenerative therapy is the right starting point or whether another approach is needed before introducing these technologies.

A New Option for People Who Feel Stuck

One of the most common frustrations people experience with chronic pain is feeling like they have run out of options.

Regenerative therapy offers a different approach.

Instead of simply suppressing symptoms, technologies like Focused Shockwave, Radial Shockwave, and EMTT stimulate biological activity within tissue, helping the body move toward repair and recovery.

For many people, this represents a meaningful shift in how musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain can be treated.

And as these technologies continue to evolve, the ability to support the body’s natural healing processes will only continue to grow.

Is Your Sleep Routine Causing More Aches & Pains?

Aug 8, 2025

Do you wake up feeling stiff, sore, or achy? Your sleep routine may be a major contributing factor. Poor sleep is directly linked to increased injuries, more frequent pain episodes, and longer recovery times. While treatments like physical therapy and massage provide temporary relief, lasting improvement starts with quality sleep. Your body undergoes crucial repair processes while you sleep, reducing inflammation, strengthening resilience, and supporting mobility. However, most people overestimate their actual sleep time. Wearable devices like Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Oura Ring can help track sleep patterns and optimize recovery. Ignoring sleep issues can lead to long-term declines in flexibility, strength, and overall health. Prioritizing sleep as part of your recovery strategy can prevent chronic pain and improve performance. Need guidance? Our team at Sports Performance Physical Therapy can help analyze your sleep data and provide personalized recovery strategies.
