If you struggle with claustrophobia, the thought of entering a hyperbaric oxygen chamber might seem daunting. But the good news is that HBOT can still be a safe and comfortable experience for you. At Sports Performance Physical Therapy, we guide you through the process step by step to ensure you get the full benefits without discomfort.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
HBOT is a powerful treatment that increases oxygen levels in your bloodstream, supporting healing for a variety of conditions, including:
- Injury recovery (post-surgery, sports injuries)
- Brain health (stroke, traumatic brain injury, cognitive function)
- General wellness (boosting oxygen levels for faster recovery)
During the session, you’ll wear an oxygen mask that delivers nearly 100% pure oxygen while the chamber gradually increases air pressure—similar to what you feel when flying in an airplane or scuba diving. This higher pressure allows oxygen to penetrate deeper into your tissues, accelerating healing.
But What If I’m Claustrophobic?
Many people worry about feeling trapped in an enclosed space, but HBOT chambers are designed with comfort in mind. Here are three ways we help our clients feel at ease:
1. Expert Guidance Throughout Your Session
You won’t be alone! A trained specialist will be with you every step of the way, communicating through a walkie-talkie and visually monitoring you through the chamber window. They will guide you through breathing techniques and ensure you feel comfortable at all times.
2. Support System – Bring a Friend or Family Member
We encourage clients to bring a trusted friend, spouse, or family member to help them feel more at ease. Having a familiar face nearby can significantly reduce anxiety and make the experience more enjoyable.
3. Built-in Safety Mechanisms
If at any point you feel uncomfortable, HBOT chambers have quick-release pressure systems, allowing for a fast and easy exit. You are in complete control of your session and can stop at any time if needed.
Acclimating to HBOT: Taking It One Step at a Time
For first-time users, we start with a shorter 30-minute session to help you adjust to the space and pressure changes. Over time, you can gradually increase to the full 60 to 90-minute sessions, allowing your body and mind to acclimate comfortably.
Most clients overcome their initial claustrophobia after just one or two sessions once they realize how spacious the chamber is and how soothing the experience can be.
Is HBOT Right for You?
If claustrophobia has been holding you back from trying HBOT, rest assured that with proper guidance, support, and safety measures, you can successfully complete your sessions and reap the full benefits of oxygen therapy.
