3 Simple Ways To Deal With Low Back Pain If You Work A Desk Job

March 9, 2023 Posted by Dr. Christopher Garcia, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS, USAW Acupuncture, Ankle & Foot, CrossFit, Elbow & Hand, Fitness & Performance Training, Health & Wellness, Hip, Back & Core, Injury Prevention, Knee, Massage Therapy, Neck, Physical Therapy, Recovery Techniques, Running, Shoulder, Warm Up & Mobility, Youth Athletes

Low back pain is a common issue for people who work desk jobs. Sitting for extended periods, coupled with poor posture and lack of movement, can lead to discomfort and pain in the lower back. Fortunately, there are simple ways to address this issue and improve your comfort level. Here are three ways to deal with low back pain if you work a desk job:

1. Practice good posture
One of the most common causes of low back pain is poor posture. Sitting with your shoulders hunched forward and your lower back curved can place unnecessary stress on your spine. To prevent this, practice good posture. Sit with your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the floor. Keep your computer screen at eye level to avoid straining your neck. Additionally, consider investing in an ergonomic chair or cushion that provides adequate support to your lower back.

2. Take frequent breaks
Sitting for extended periods can be detrimental to your back health. To counteract this, take frequent breaks throughout the day. Stand up and walk around for a few minutes every hour. Stretch your arms and legs to get your blood flowing. Incorporating short, low-impact exercises like lunges and squats can also be helpful in reducing tension and stiffness.

3. Incorporate low-impact exercise into your routine
Incorporating low-impact exercise into your routine can be a powerful way to prevent and reduce low back pain. Regular exercise can strengthen the muscles that support your spine and increase flexibility. Consider incorporating exercises like yoga or Pilates into your routine, as these can be particularly beneficial for those with low back pain. These types of exercises focus on core strength and flexibility, which can help reduce tension and strain on the lower back.

In conclusion, low back pain can be a challenging issue for those who work desk jobs. However, by practicing good posture, taking frequent breaks, and incorporating low-impact exercise into your routine, you can reduce pain and discomfort and improve your overall back health. If your back pain persists, consider speaking with a medical professional or licensed physical therapist for further guidance.
